Electric Motors: Different Applications Increasingly Adopt Brushless Motors

An electric motor at its core produces torque. Many might consider it to be a mundane electrical machine but it is used in the most exciting and remarkable applications enabling human advancement and progress. And an increasing number of applications are adopting Permanent Magnet Brushless motors.

An electric motor is an essential part of modern-day life. We can see its application everywhere in our homes from washing machines to mixer-grinders, fans, trimmers, etc. It also plays a major role in every industry sector in a wide range of applications like pumps and fans, power tools, compressors and machine tools etc. New upcoming applications like electric vehicles, drones, robots etc. all use an electric motor as a prime driver.

All electric motors use electrical current to produce rotating magnetic fields which generate rotational mechanical force in the armature. The various motor designs use this basic concept to convert electrical energy into a mechanical force and provide different levels of speed and torque.

The table below encapsulates the key types of motors, their applications and how permanent magnet brushless motors is emerging as a viable alternative.

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)/Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are synchronous motors which have permanent magnets on the rotor and current carying conductors on the stator with electronic commutation. The speed, position and torque are controlled by an electronic controller. These motors are highly energy efficient, compact in size and require low or zero maintenance and are thus finding applications in electric vehicles, drones, cordless power tools, robotics, medical and industrial automation.

Alphasine Technologies is a technology start-up designing and manufacturing energy-efficient PMSM/BLDC motors and their controllers in Lucknow, India. It is our vision to be a leader in the space of ultra-high efficiency motors, drives & controllers providing cutting-edge technology to numerous industries like electric vehicles, aerospace and defence, industrial machinery & consumer appliances.

In our next article we will talk more about a BLDC motor and give more details about its construction, advantages and the increasing scope of its applications and uses.
